BCL Landscaping delivered a captivating outdoor space inspired by biophilic design as this year’s Unilock Awards of Excellence Featured Project.
“Their property is a little more unique and one-of-a-kind,” said Corbett. “They’re big entertainers, so the goal was to create a space that stood out and allowed for various activities.”To bring their vision to life, Corbett used Uvision® 3D Landscape Creator to design a digital rendering of the homeowners’ space. This tool allowed him to refine key areas of the patio and add enticing features like a pickleball court, putting green, and artificial turf, which helped frame the expansive yard. Once his clients were satisfied with the design, Corbett and his team quickly got to work.

The transformation began on the upper deck, where the team installed Umbriano® pavers in Summer Wheat, blending rectangular and hexagonal shapes for a modern, geometric look. In key areas like the fire table and billiards zone, rectangular pavers were rotated 45 degrees to subtly define the gathering spaces, while hexagonal pavers framed the walkouts and dining areas. Made with EnduraColor™ technology, these pavers resist fading and maintain their refined appearance over time. That long-term durability is further supported by the addition of EasyClean™, a factory-sealed coating that offers built-in stain resistance for easier cleanup of spills and stains.
Beyond performance, visual harmony played a key role in the design. To achieve this, a darker accent border of Copthorne® was introduced to complement the beige tones of the patio, while defining the edges of the upper and lower decks. This thoughtful combination of paver tones created a cohesive aesthetic that Corbett said was inspired by the home’s architecture.
“I liked that everything’s a seamless match,” said Corbett. “The Summer Wheat tone was perfect for their more earth-toned home, while the Copthorne® tied in with the red and burgundy brick accents.”

Building on the thoughtful preservation of the home’s original features, the team decided to retain the brickwork along the pool wall and outdoor kitchen. To further enhance the space’s texture and contrast, Corbett introduced SienaEdge™ walls in Fieldstone, which ran along the perimeter of the home and lower decks. These walls, with their clean lines and crisp edges, not only complemented the original brickwork, but also created functional, level surfaces for the grandkids to sit, walk, or play on.
One of the project’s main challenges, Corbett noted, was managing the site’s significant elevation changes. Fortunately, the homeowners’ flexibility allowed the team to adjust their plans as the build progressed.
“When we hit different elevation changes in their yard, we had to make several changes on the fly,” said Corbett. “We tried to plan out spaces and areas where they could maintain 40 to 50 people and not feel cramped.”

To deepen that sense of retreat, Corbett thoughtfully layered in biophilic design elements throughout the space. Palm trees, fire bowls, natural stone paths, a rock garden, and a dramatic waterfall came together to evoke a Hawaiian-inspired oasis. These elements enhanced the warm beige tones of the pavers, unifying the entire space through color and texture.
Further down at the lower pool area, a built-in water slide and volleyball setup ensured that the homeowners’ grandkids – and guests of all ages – had plenty to enjoy.

Reflecting on the project, Corbett credited Unilock for being a dependable partner at every stage of the design.
“Being an Authorized Contractor and working with Unilock has played a huge role in our success in helping us sell these larger jobs,” said Corbett.
“It gives our homeowners reassurance that if there were a problem, things would get handled so we could hit our deadlines, and make them happy.”
