Joint Sand also know as “jointing sand” or “jointing material” is a critical component of any paver system and is required in order for the installation to perform as intended. There are many types of joint sand but first and foremost, the application will dictate the most appropriate type of joint infill required.

Joint sand is so important that there is an ASTM specification that dictates the range of particle sizes for the sand to be the most effective at “locking up” the pavers. Always use sand that conforms to ASTM C-144 especially in vehicular applications.

Masonry Sand – is a fine sand and is NOT recommended for any vehicular applications

Concrete Sand – Is a mix of coarse and fine sand gradation C-33 which creates the perfect blend for “locking up” the pavers. Sometimes available indifferent colors but is generally is tan in color.

Polymeric Sand – Is the gradation of concrete sand but contains a cementitious binder to solidify the joint to mitigate erosion, weeds, and insect infestation. It is usually available in several colors.

Resin Modified Sand – Is a mixture of graded sands and resins which create a solid rigid joint which has some permeability but is not used for true permeable applications.

Clear stone Chip – is a graded split stone chip (ASTM No. 9) which is used for permeable joint applications.

 

JOINT SAND HEIGHT

For best performance and appearance it is recommended to install the joint sand so that it is approximately 1/8” below the bottom of the paver beveled edge or in the case of non beveled pavers, 1/8” below the paver surface. In the case of pavers with rounded edges, the top of the sand joint sand should be right at the point where the curve begins to go vertical.
